Introduction and Humidifier Buying Guide

If you are having issues with dry skin, your eyes constantly itch, you wake up at night because of coughing and a dry throat, you get unexpected nose bleeds or you can’t live without a tube of Chapstick in your hand – particularly in the winter months – the air in your house is too dry and you need a humidifier.

And if your woodwork, wood floors and wood furniture are drying out and cracking, or your wallpaper is starting to peel, your home needs a humidifier.

That’s a good start. But where do you go from there?

Naturally, you read our buying guide first and then check out Your House Garden’s rankings of the top 7 best humidifiers. We happen to have both of them right here for your convenience. You can thank us after you feel better.

Recommended Humidity Level?

Sales of humidifiers skyrocket in winter.

The key reason being that cold air holds less water, so as the temperature drops the amount of moisture in the air drops and symptoms can start to appear (this also means symptoms are worse overnight as it is generally colder).

There are a few ways to measure humidity levels in the air, but the most commonly used when talking about humidifiers is relative humidity, which is expressed as a percentage.

A general comfortable humidity level for people is about 40-60%.  If you are experiencing any humidity related symptoms, such as congestion, then you might want to temporarily crank up the humidity level in your room to 70-80% to get some relief. Left unchecked, humidity levels in winter can drop to as low as 10%, especially as central heating units can remove even more moisture from the air.

The more advanced humidifiers have built-in humidistats (sensors that measure relative humidity) which you can use to set the desired humidity level in your room.

Humidifier Buying Guide – Cool Mist vs. Warm Mist Humidifiers

The function of humidifiers is to put moisture back into air that’s too dry, and they generally fall into two categories: cool mist and warm mist.

Since you normally need a humidifier when the weather is cold, it would be natural to assume that a warm mist model would be a better choice. In reality, they’re equally effective and there are arguments in favor of each.

Warm Mist Humidifiers

Warm mist humidifiers release their moisture-containing mist after either boiling water or warming it with a heating element.

The boiling process may be the healthiest option because it kills germs, but boiling water can create danger if there are children in the household. The mist from a water-heating model loses most of its warmth by the time it hits the air, so only a boiler model truly releases heat that you’d be likely to notice.

These humidifiers are particularly helpful for clearing clogged noses and sinuses and work best in smaller spaces.

There are Two Main Types of Cool Mist Humidifiers.

1) Evaporative models take air from a room and add moisture by passing it through a wick/filter that’s saturated with water. The humidified mist is then blown back out by a fan and the water evaporates into the air, making the atmosphere more humid.

Evaporative units are generally noiser, their filters must be replaced regularly and their mist is a bit cooler.

2) Ultrasonic humidifiers create high-frequency vibrations to break water drops into micro-fine particles which are released into the room for evaporation.

While ultrasonic humidifiers are extremely quiet but require the use of distilled water (unless they have a filter like the BONECO) to prevent minerals from tap water being released as “white dust.”

Warm vs Cool Mist Humidifiers

All types of cool mist humidifiers use less electricity and can cover larger areas than warm mist models, but must be cleaned more frequently (to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria).

They’re the best choice for allergy and asthma sufferers.

Some humidifiers “cross categories.” You can buy ultrasonic warm mist models, as well as ones that have both warm and cool mist capabilities. Several types of whole-home humidification systems are available as well. Ultrasonic cool mist humidifiers are the most commonly-sold units.

Ideal Humidifier for Your Room Size

Once you’ve chosen the style of humidifier, the next task is to understand what model to choose for the area required.

Generally, a small humidifier will work effectively in rooms up to about 250 square feet (about 24 meters squared), or 16 feet by 16 feet.

Medium-sized models can cover up 700 square feet (about 65 meters squared), or rooms about 27 feet by 27 feet.

Large (up to 1000 square feet) and extra-large (1000+ square feet) humidifiers usually come in console form. Some have wheels and can be moved fairly easily, while others are designed to sit permanently in one spot. They have much larger tanks but are more of a chore to clean.

Smaller and medium-sized models can sit on a nightstand or tabletop and be moved from room to room as required. They’re obviously less-expensive than larger humidifiers, but their tanks will have to be filled more frequently.

Our list focuses on small and medium-sized models – we do not cover any of the larger models.

Best Humidifier – Helpful Features

Budget humidifiers won’t give you much more than a dial to control moisture level (from low to high) and hopefully, auto-shutoff or a warning light for when the machine runs dry.

Several features on higher-level humidifiers, however, are extremely desirable. The best is a humidistat that automatically turns the unit on or off in order to maintain a target humidity level. Also quite helpful is a timer, which lets you (for example) set your bedroom humidifier to turn on a few hours before bedtime so your room is comfortable when you’re ready for sleep.

Another plus is a built-in anti-microbial system, either a filter or ultraviolet light, which kills most of the bacteria and germs that could be expelled with the mist.

One final tip: most humidifier tanks, and all of those on our current list, fill from the bottom, so just ensure you have a large enough sink so you can position the tank under your faucet (or you’ll waste lots of time transferring water from tap to tank).

Humidifiers and Noise

All humidifiers will make some noise (do not believe the “no noise” claims), and interestingly the types of noises they make do vary.  In general:

  • the better quality models (i.e. more expensive) will make less noise – better design and quality of build etc.
  • the warm mist humidifiers are noiser – they need to heat/boil the water.
  • the larger more powerful models will make more noise – logical we know.

We specify the dB levels of each of the models (at low and high settings) and try to describe the noise as best we can.

We have found that babies and toddlers are less sensitive to the noise of humidifiers, and some even find the background white noise comforting.

If you are a light sleeper then you can simply crank the humidifier up before bed, and either turn it off at night or buy a model with a humidistat so it will only turn on if the humidity drops below a certain level.

Humidifiers and “White Dust”

If you live in an area with hard water (water with a high mineral content) then there is a chance that you might end up with “white dust” on items in your room, after using a humidifier (depending on the model).  When the mist created by your humidifier lands on different surfaces and dries, mineral deposits can be left behind. For most people “white dust” is nothing more than a small annoyance (it is very simple to wipe off), but if you have allergies or lung issues then these minerals can be a problem.

If you are concerned about “white dust” then there are a few ways to combat it:

1) Fill your humidifier with distilled water, or filtered water.  If you live in an area with hard water then there is a chance you already filter it before drinking – maybe with something like the Britta filter Pitcher or buy installing a specialized at home water filter system?

2) Purchase a humidifier with a demineralization cartridge which will remove minerals before they become airborne.

3) Ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers typically create more white dust than evaporative and steam vaporizer models.  There are no impeller models on our list, and we describe the type of humidification process each model uses so you can make an informed choice.

Here are the recommendations from the Your House Garden review team for the top 7 best humidifiers.

1. BONECO – Air Washer W200 Humidifier & Purifier

BONECO W200 Large Room 2 In 1 Whisper Quiet Humidifier Air Washer with Automatic Shut Off and Fragrance Essential Oil Container, White

The Boneco Air Washer humidifies and purifies the air in your home, at a very reasonable price.

The BONECO (formerly Air-O-Swiss) is ultrasonic, utilizing high-frequency vibrations to convert water into a mist which is then sprayed into the room. It’s a powerful machine capable of covering a 540-square foot room with mist.

The large tank lets the machine run for a full day before it has to be refilled, and has an adjustable rotating mist outlet so you are in control.

[youtube id=”7MZw8QlxXXo” width=”750″ height=”340″ position=”left”]

Sleeping with the Air-O-Swiss running is easy because it’s very quiet. The unit is well-built and ships with the essential evaporator mat.

There’s nothing Your House Garden can think of that’s been left out, making this machine tops on our list of the top 7 best humidifiers.

Looking at the specifications of the BONECO – Air Washer W200 Humidifier & Purifier:

  • Mist: Cool
  • Humidification area: 540 square feet (50m squared)
  • Tank size: 1 gallon
  • “Intelligent Temperature Compensation” regulates humidity based on temperature
  • Dimensions: 11 x 11 x 16 inches
  • Warranty: 5 year limited
  • White Dust: Ultrasonic model, but operates with Demineralization Cartridges to stop white dust
  • Noise factor: very quiet at less than 32dB on any setting which is amazing.  The sound is like a low hum of a fan with some very occasional water dripping sounds.

2. Levoit Humidifier LV600HH 6L Ultrasonic Warm And Cool Mist

Levoit Humidifiers 6L Warm And Cool Mist Vaporizer - front on - best humidifier review
Levoit Humidifier LV600HH 6L Warm And Cool Mist Vaporizer. Click photo to check the Price on Amazon.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money for a unit that can humidify with either warm or cool mist; this Levoit comes in at about half the price of Your House Garden’s top-rated humidifier.

How is that possible? It’s primarily because the 6L Levoit model has a much smaller effective coverage area, 280 square feet, compared to the Boneco’s 650 square feet, which is the reason we’ve ranked this one at #2.

It also does not have a filter so you will need to use filtered or distilled water.

The Levoit has many of the same features that the review team loved on the Boneco: an automatic mode that judges conditions in the room and adjusts humidity levels accordingly, the ability to program humidity levels (from 40 to 80%), ultrasonic operation that’s very quiet it won’t disturb you (or a sleeping baby) – and of course, the ability to choose between warm and cool mist.

This humidifier doesn’t have a single 360° rotating spout but it does have two misting ports – which can be pointed in the same or different directions.

Levoit Humidifiers 6L Warm And Cool Mist Vaporizer - best humidifier review
Another very effective (and fully featured) warm or cool mist humidifier for a smaller room than the Boneco can handle (at a smaller price).

There are low/high heat settings and three fan settings, an easy-to-use remote control and a 12-hour timer with auto-shutoff, and a very cool aromatherapy feature which diffuses your choice of scent when you add a little essential oil to the built-in aroma box.

This Levoit is well-built and won’t leak, the 1.6G tank will hold enough water for 12-24 hours of operation, and it has an attractive, modern appearance. The only objection we’ve found is that the LED humidity indicator on the front of the unit is really bright, but you can turn it off with the remote control at bedtime.

The Levoit LV600HH 6L Warm and Cool Humidifier does a great job at a very nice price but is only suitable for smaller spaces like a bedroom.

Facts and figures for the Levoit Humidifiers 6L Warm And Cool Mist Vaporizer:

  • Mist: warm and cool
  • Humidification area: 280 square feet
  • Tank size: 1.6 gallons
  • Auto mode regulates humidity based on temperature
  • Timer (1 to 12 hours) or continuous operation
  • Transparent water tank
  • Essential oil tray
  • Remote control
  • Dimensions: 11.5 x 7.5 x 11 inches
  • Warranty: 2 year limited
  • White Dust: Ultrasonic with no filter, so use distilled water if you have hard water to avoid white dust
  • Noise factor: sound changes depending on the setting.
    • Warm mist high setting is 65dB.  Very low kettle boiling sound.
    • Cool mist high and low setting is  50dB.   Low humming sounds of the fan, and occasional water dripping sounds.

3. Honeywell UV HCM-350  Evaporation (Cool Mist) Humidifier

Best Humidifier - Top Honeywell HCM-350 Cool Humidifier
Honeywell UV HCM-350 Cool Mist Humidifier. Click on the photo to check the Price on Amazon.

The Honeywell HCM-350 is a very reasonably-priced cool mist evaporation unit (meaning water is passed through a large wick placed in the tank), which does a good job of humidifying a small-to-medium room. The manufacturers claim that it has a 700-square foot coverage area, but it seems to be smaller than that in reality.

There’s not a lot of user control possible; the machine relies on its “self-regulating evaporative system” to automatically adjust to the temperature of the room and therefore the amount of moisture the air can contain. It still does a nice job, though, for the price – and it’s reasonably quiet.

Honeywell UV HCM-350 Cool Mist Humidifier - best humidifier review
A brilliant cool mist humidifier that will comfortably humidify medium sized rooms.

An interesting twist to the Honeywell is its use of ultraviolet light as well as an antimicrobial filter to kill bacteria and germs in the tank.

A not-so-optimal fact is that the machine does not have an automatic shut-off feature, so you have to keep a close eye on the water level which is shown in a small side window.

[youtube id=”m6cN_bVgo8c” width=”750″ height=”340″ position=”left”]

The HCM-350 is larger than most of the competitors, but still, has a sleek blue-and-silver appearance which doesn’t ruin the ambiance of a room.

At less than the price of our top-rated models, this is a very good option for those searching for a simple humidifier. Key specifications of the Honeywell HCM-350 Cool Mist Humidifier:

  • Mist: cool
  • Humidification area: 700 square feet
  • Tank size: 1.5 gallons
  • Self-regulating humidification system
  • Ultraviolet light prevents bacteria and mold growth
  • Plastic construction, dishwasher safe
  • Dimensions: 8 x 15.6 x 11.5 inches
  • Warranty: 3 year limited
  • White Dust: Evaporative with Filter, so no white dust
  • Noise factor: High setting 75dB, Medium setting 70 dB, Low setting 65dB.  The noise is from the fan.

4. Vicks V745A Warm Mist Humidifier

Best Humidifier Review - Vicks V745A Warm Mist Humidifier
Vicks V745A Warm Mist Humidifier. Click on the photo to check the Price on Amazon.

Don’t be put off by childhood memories of Vicks VapoRub or the relatively-low price of this humidifier. This is the best warm mist model you can choose for when you’re dealing with a cold or the flu.

The V745 is a boiler-type humidifier, so you’ll want to keep your toddlers away from it if they’re overly inquisitive, active or uncoordinated. However, it can keep them (or you) breathing easy by producing a large amount of warm mist.

What really makes this model uniquely effective is the included medicine cup that can be filled with Vicks Vaposteam or other over-the-counter inhalants, to produce not just mist but a medicated vapor that will really help during cold and flu season.

Vicks V745A Warm Mist Humidifier - best humidifier review
A very effective warm mist humidifier which can produce a nice medicated vapor.

This Vicks humidifier can cover a 500 square foot area even though it fits nicely on a tabletop, with a one-gallon tank that is enough to last through the night (and drains completely so there’s no standing water for excessive bacteria or mold growth).

There are no extravagant features, but the high/low moisture dial and auto-shutoff are more than sufficient for the V745’s intended use. There’s a nightlight, too.

This is not a humidifier suitable for use year-round, and you may not even want to use it all winter. But an enormous number of people use humidifiers just when they’re sick, and the Vicks V745A is the perfect prescription.

A closer look at the Vicks V745 Warm Mist Humidifier:

  • Mist: warm
  • Humidification area: 500 square feet
  • Tank size: 1 gallon
  • Transparent water tank
  • Built-in medicine cup
  • Automatic shut-off
  • Dimensions: 12 x 8 x 14 inches
  • Warranty: 3 year limited
  • White Dust: Steam Vaporizer so no white dust
  • Noise factor: High Setting is 65dB, low setting is 45dB.  Very low kettle boiling sound.

5. PureGuardian H4810 120-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier – Warm and Cool Mist

PureGuardian H4810AR Ultrasonic Warm and Cool Mist Humidifier for Bedrooms, Quiet, Filter-Free, 120 Hr, 2 Gal Treated Tank Surface Resists Mold, Pure Guardian Humidifier with Essential Oil Tray

This is a slightly less-functional plastic unit, with a slightly smaller price tag to match –  the PureGuardian is a warm and cool ultrasonic mist machine which can humidify a 500-square foot room quite well.

It provides a choice between three different levels of humidity with a push-button control panel (and of course, the choice between cool or warm mist); one noticeable difference between this and the more expensive units is that the Guardian’s warm mist isn’t overly warm.

This machine is very quiet, and a nice function is the ability to turn off the indicator lights while you sleep. There is no filter or demineralization cartridge included with the unit.  So either buy the additional demineralization cartridge or use soft water and not hard water, or you will end up with white particles shooting out of the spout along with the mist.

It does include a “Silver Clean” protection system to prevent mold and mildew growth inside the tank, as well as a dual-direction misting system similar to the Stadler Form William.

The Pure Guardian is pretty and modern-looking in silver and blue, but the tank is not transparent so you’ll have to keep an eye on the low-level indicator to know when it’s time to add water. It’s also harder to take apart for cleaning than most of its competitors.

Overall, this is a solid performer without bells-and-whistles that’s extremely quiet, and a good choice for those who want to keep the cost down a bit.

The specs for the Guardian Technologies PureGuardian H4810 Ultrasonic Humidifier:

  • Mist: warm and cool
  • Humidification area: 500 square feet
  • Tank size: 2 gallons
  • “Silver Clean” system prevents bacteria and mold growth
  • Low water indicator
  • Plastic construction
  • Dual-direction mist head
  • Automatic shut-off
  • Dimensions: 8 x 15.6 x 11.5 inches
  • Warranty: 3 year limited
  • White Dust: Ultrasnoic so buy the demineralization cartridges to remove white dust, link below
  • Noise factor: sound changes depending on the setting.
    • Warm mist high setting is 58dB.  Very low kettle boiling sound.
    • Cool mist high and low setting is  48dB.   Low humming sounds of the fan.

6. TaoTronics TT-AH001 Cool Mist Humidifier

TaoTronics Humidifier - best humidifier reviews
TaoTronics Humidifier. Click on the photo to check the price on Amazon.

One of the least-expensive models in the Your House Garden top five is another very quiet ultrasonic humidifier that does a terrific job in small rooms.

This TaoTronics has most of the features you’d expect in a cool mist humidifier, including the ability to manually adjust humidity levels (from 40 to 95 percent), three fan settings, a nozzle that rotates 360°, and a 24-hour timer with auto-shutoff. The LED humidity indicator isn’t too bright and can be shut off completely if desired.

The TT-AH001 has a capacity of just over one gallon, which should last for the better part of a day. That brings us to the review team’s biggest issue with this TaoTronics humidifier; it’s one of those units which require you to remove the tank, bring it to the sink and tip it upside down in order to refill it. That can not only be annoying, it leaves water in the base of the humidifier which has to be removed regularly in order to prevent mold growth.

TaoTronics TT-AH001 Cool Mist Humidifier For Home Bedroom - best humidifier review
A reasonably priced cool mist humidifier, with lots of features, that is suitable for smaller rooms.

The refilling procedure isn’t a deal-killer, particularly for a low-priced model, but it should at least be one of your considerations. One other note: the ceramic filter does a good job in most cases, but you may see some white dust if your water is extremely hard.

For an inexpensive cool mist humidifier, the TaoTronics TT-AHAH001 is impressive. You may need more machine, though, if you have a large space to cover or very hard water.

Looking closer at the TaoTronics TT-AH001 Cool Mist Humidifier For Home Bedroom:

  • Mist: Cool
  • Humidification area: 400 square feet
  • Tank size: 1.1 gallons
  • Timer (1 to 24 hours) or continuous operation
  • Partially-transparent water tank
  • Refill indicator
  • Dimensions: 11.3 x 8 x 11.3 inches
  • Warranty: 1 year limited
  • White Dust: Ultrasonic with ceramic filter (not that effective), so use distilled water if you have hard water to avoid white dust
  • Noise factor: High and Low setting 50dB.  Some water dripping sounds.

7. Vornado Evap2 Whole Room Cool Mist Evaporative Humidifier

Best Humidifier - Vornado Evap2 Whole Room Humidifier
Vornado Evap2 Whole Room Evaporative Humidifier. Click on the photo to check the Price on Amazon.

The Your House Garden team wouldn’t use this humidifier in our bedroom if we were trying to sleep because it can get quite loud when running at its highest setting.

Otherwise, it’s a powerful cool mist machine which can humidify in a hurry even though it’s one of the smallest models on the market.

The Vornado Evap2 is designed for medium-sized rooms up to 600-square feet, and like most other less-expensive options it doesn’t allow you to control the humidification level. However, if you don’t just leave it running full-time, an internal humidistat will turn the machine on and off as needed to keep the room full of moist, cool mist.

As mentioned, the Vornado has a very small footprint for an effective humidifier, and its black plastic case with blue and silver accents will look good almost anywhere. If they could just make it a bit quieter, it could easily be a top-three choice next to much more expensive alternatives.

Here’s a check of the Vornado Evap2 Whole Room Evaporative Humidifier’s specs:

  • Mist: cool
  • Humidification area: 600 square feet
  • Tank size: 1 gallon
  • Self-regulating humidification system
  • Three fan settings (low, auto, high), fan-only operation possible
  • Plastic construction, dishwasher safe
  • Dimensions: 8.8 x 9.5 x 14.1 inches
  • Warranty: 5 year limited
  • White Dust: Evaporative with Filter, so no white dust – link below
  • Noise factor: The noise is from the fan.

Stadler Form William Ultrasonic Humidifier

Best Humidifier - Top Stadler Form William Humidifier
Stadler Form William Ultrasonic Humidifier. Click on the photo to check the Price on Amazon.

This is an older model that is no longer available on Amazon at a reasonable price.

The William provides most of the same functions as the Air-O-Swiss, with a couple of extra goodies (including a nominal effective area of 860 square feet). It has a warm/cool mist ultrasonic machine, meaning it’s versatile, quiet and effective.

This unit includes what the manufacturer says is a patented “Silver Cube” system which will stop mold and bacteria from growing in the tank, a major problem with most humidifiers over time. Like the Air-O-Swiss, it has humidity control levels (although with fewer settings to choose from), a timer and sleep mode, automatic shut-off, and an included demineralization cartridge.

Two nice features unique to the William are a dual direction nozzle so the spray can be sent into two different directions at once, and a diffuser on the nozzle so you can choose how fine the spray will be.

With a sleek black and silver design making the machine look more like an audio component than a humidifier, this is an appliance which will look great no matter where you put it, and it provides excellent performance.

Specs for the Stadler Form William Ultrasonic Humidifier:

  • Mist: warm and cool
  • Humidification area: 860 square feet
  • Tank size: 1.5 gallons
  • “Ionic Silver Cube” prevents bacteria and mold growth
  • Sleep mode, timer (1 to 8 hours) or continuous operation
  • Transparent water tank
  • Mist-diffuser and dual-direction mist head
  • Automatic shut-off
  • Dimensions: 9 x 6.2 x 12.1 inches

  1. Hi. I have 3 cats and unfortunately, a few friends are allergic to them. Ive read a humidifier would help. Which humidifier would you recommend for a medium sized room. I guess it would be a humidifier for allergies.

  2. I”m looking for a humidifier for about 700-1000 sq feet. I have a 7ft grand piano that needs more moisture in the air. I am ocd on cleaning and dusting so I need a system that makes the least amount of dust. What in your professional opinion would be my best option. ?

    • Hi John,

      Thanks for getting in touch.

We talk quite a bit about how to minimize white dust in our article i.e. you definitely want to make sure your humidifier has a built in filter, and if you live in an area with hard water then if possible pre-filter any water (or better yet used distilled water). Also, as a generalisation (but definitely depending on the make and model) you will find ultrasonic models will create more white dust than evaporative and steam vaporiser models.

The best 2 options on our list that will, just, work in your room size of 700 sq feet are the Boneco and Honeywell humidifiers. If you want to ensure your larger room size of 700-1000 sq feet is comfortably covered then Honeywell does a brilliant model, HEV685W, (which is very similar but larger than the model we talk about) and will comfortably cover a room up to 1000 square feet – it also has a nice 3 year warranty.

You can read more about the Honeywell HEV685V humidifier on Amazon via this link -> https://geni.us/honeywellhev685w

  3. Hi
Did you test the Dyson 303117?
I have small room and keep the humidifier on my nightstand….I live in the mountains and it is really dry…..really want something to keep our skin moistened during the night but low maintenance…
Curious to know what you think of the Dyson(outside of the high price point)
    Thank you

    • Hi Jodi,

Personally, I am a sucker for Dyson products, they look so good, have great design features and the customer support is typically brilliant. I will only buy them, however, for myself when they are on sale because as you mentioned the prices are usually at a premium.

For the price though, even on sale, the Dyson AM10 Humidifier (model number 303117-01) seems to lack a lot of what we would consider key features for a humidifier.

It does not have a filter or demineralization cartridge, so if you have hard water you are likely to get white dust.
The size of the water tank is quite small – 3 liters (0.75 gallons) compared to Boneco and Levoit’s tank sizes of about 6 liters (1.5 gallons).
It does not have a cool and warm mist option
The humidification area is quite small at 170 square feet
It does have intelligent/accurate climate control and comfort – measures temperature and humidity and adjusts accordingly to create a comfortable environment
Its key marketing point is that it cleans 99.9% of bacteria in the water which is great.
It is quite hard to clean, maintain and to fill the water tank. The refill hole is very small and the tank is not that easy to access.
It is about as quiet as the Boneco and Levoit at the same settings.
It only comes with a remote for operation i.e. there are no buttons on the unit, so don’t lose the remote.

    • Hi Douglas,

That is correct, as we mentioned in the article, our list focuses on small and medium-sized models.

Did you need an option for an office?

  4. I am looking for an easy to clean humidifier. My last one could not be taken apart to clean. I want no residue on my furniture. Could do a couple smaller units. prefer cool air and not too noisy

    • Hi Debbie,

      Thanks for the great question.

I think the Air-O-Swiss/BONECO AOS 7135 Ultrasonic Humidifier – Warm and Cool Mist ticks all the boxes for you. It is easy to clean, it is ultrasonic but uses demineralization cartridges to eliminate white dust (you can also further filter your water beforehand if you live in an area with very hard water) and is very quiet.

The other option is the Honeywell UV HCM-350 Evaporation (Cool Mist) Humidifier, but we did find it slightly noisier (it is also very easy to clean).

Please let me know if you have any follow up questions.

      Kind Regards,
      Lisa

  5. I have tried a number of humidifiers in the last 2 years and will actually return another one i just purchased after reading the manual and calling the company. I have very hard water here so it appears a filter is needed? Or, what guarantee, because this happened to me, is there that the cartridges will be available for at least a few years? This process is driving me nuts, don’t know that there is a good one out there and I don’t mind spending the $ to get one.
one bedroom open plan, roughly 500 Sq.Ft, Canadian winter, not too heavy tank
Also, please define “quality” mentioned, as in my experience on all new goods there is no such thing anymore! so tired of re-packing items to return them, won’t pay for “garbage”. Thanks so much

    • Hi Peggy,

Sorry to hear about your frustrations. It might be helpful to know which products you have tried already, but I think the Air-O-Swiss/BONECO AOS 7135 Ultrasonic Humidifier – Warm and Cool Mist is a very safe bet. 3-year warranty (Swiss made quality), ultra reliable, easy to operate, powerful and no sign of product or cartridge availability issues.

Do let me know if you have any follow up questions.

  6. Hi there,
I’m finding it very overwhelming reading review after review on the internet about which humidifier is best, therefore I’m wondering if you can just narrow it down to a couple of options for me. I’m looking for my bedroom which is approx 140 sq ft and is:
    a) low maintenance
    b) with/without filters doesn’t matter as long as replacing a filter is anywhere from 6-12months , will always be available for my unit and easy to find and buy
    c) easy to fill water tank, preferably from the top, that will hold enough water for 12-24 hours of operation
    e) cool mist or combo but not warm only
    f) doesn’t need distilled water, I don’t care about noise as I sleep with a fan on for white noise

    Thanks!

    • Hi Nicole,

Not a problem, there is a lot of information to digest. Here are 2 suggestions based on your requirements:

      1) If you just wanted the best, then go for the Air-O-Swiss/BONECO AOS 7135 Ultrasonic Humidifier – Warm and Cool Mist. It is low maintenance, filters are easily available, regulates itself based on the temperature, sleep function, large 1.7-gallon tank which is easy to fill and will easily handle your room size.

      2) Very reasonably priced is the Honeywell UV HCM-350 Cool Mist Evaporation Humidifier. Easy to maintain, filters are readily available, simple operation, large 1.5-gallon tank which is easy to fill, and more than capable of humidifying a room of 140 sq feet.

Of course, we can provide more options but I think these 2 products cover all of your requirements and are brilliant humidifiers. Good luck!

      Kind Regards,
      Lisa

  7. I’m looking for a cool mist humidifier , that rotates, with variable mist control but doesn’t use a membrane or at least not exposed membrane- to create. The mist- is there such a unit available? Needed for average size room. It seems the membrane is getting damaged when cleaning. So I want to avoid contact with the membrane.

    • Hi PJL,

Thank you very much for your comment on Your House Garden.

Our initial thought would be to consider the BONECO humidifier. I believe it meets your requirements.

Can I ask which model you are currently using which has a membrane that is getting damaged?

      Kind Regards,

  8. I have a huge d9ubke height ceiling living room and am having a problem finding a free standing unit large enough to cover it – what are the largest free standing humidifiers you have come across?

    • Hi Anne,

      Thanks for the great question.

What you will want to look for is what they call “Multi-Room” or “Whole-House” Humidifiers – these humidifiers will deal with large room (or as the names suggest, multiple rooms). Note: the Air-O-Swiss/BONECO AOS 7135 is the largest single room humidifier we tested and will comfortably humidify rooms up to 650 square feet.

Some multi-room or whole-house, free-standing humidifier models (sticking with high-quality brands with good online reviews) we can suggest are:

      AIRCARE EP9 800 Digital Whole-House -> 2400 square feet

      AIRCARE MA1201 Whole-House -> 3600 square feet

Honeywell Cool Moisture Console Humidifier – 1900 square feet

Hope this helps a little bit.

  9. Surprised not to see Venta Airwashers on this list. No filters and the unit acts as both an air purifier as well as a humidifier.

    • Hi Dry-eyed,

Thanks for the suggestion, Your House Garden did not consider combination air purifiers and humidifiers in this review, we focused specifically on humidifiers.

For those people who are interested in a combination purifier and humidifier, the Venta does seem to produce reliable products. If you are interested you can check out their models on Amazon via this link -> http://geni.us/ventaairwasher

The Your House Garden team has reviewed air purifiers separately on the page below.

  10. What about the updated version of #2, it’s $40 and seems good right? I’m looking for something that ideally will filter the air (by drawing some in, sanitizing it with the water, then vaporizing it), not be loud, allow me to use essential oils, and be no more than $60…and show temp/humidity levels

    • Hi Sumiyah,

Thanks for contacting us. Your House Garden have not tested the Levoit LV400CH, but looking at the specifications it is not an updated version of the #2 Levoit Humidifier LV600HH. There are some clear differences between the 2 models.

The Levoit Humidifier LV600HH, has a 6-liter capacity, while the LV400CH has a 4-liter capacity. The other major differences are that the Levoit LV600HH is a warm and cool mist humidifier, so by default, the warm mist will kill any potential germs in the water before it is released as mist into the air. i.e. the LV400CH ceramic and activated carbon filters will achieve the same result as the LV600HH heating the airs as warm mist.

Having said all that if you want to save some money, like the idea of the diffuser functionality of the LV400CH, and do not want the warm mist option then we are sure the LV400CH will serve you well.

  11. On Amazon it says the TaoTronics TT-AH001 humidification area is 431-538 ft². I see many reviews and questions on Amazon claiming that this does much more then the number you stated.

Additionally, I did note on the TaoTronics website it says 82.Where exactly are you getting your numbers from as I was interested in this product? But now see that the info is confusing. Thank you.

    • Hi Ross,

Thanks for the great question – you are right with all these room size estimates things can get a bit confusing.

We took the range from the TaoTronics support documentation. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle of the ranges you have stated, and as with all these sizing estimates will depend upon a whole range of factors; starting humidity level, desired humidity level, time of operation, how well the room is “sealed”, temperature etc.

The TaoTronics will comfortably humidify a room of 82 square feet (about 9 meters squared) or rooms about 9 feet by 9 feet within a reasonable period of time – a rough estimate would be 2 hours. Over a longer period of time (8 hours), it would be able to humidify a room up to about 280 square feet (about 36 meters squared) or rooms about 17 feet by 17 feet – similar to the Levoit Humidifier. Specifically, from the manual TaoTronics state that “Using the unit in a space larger than 150meters squared will reduce its effectiveness.”

If you are not buying the humidifier to alleviate a sickness, and just want to deal with winter dryness, don’t mind changing out the water reservoir more often, are able to wait for the humidifier to “work” in a larger area, and do not expect the humidifier to operate at the higher humidity levels then Your House Garden would estimate that the TaoTronics would eventually be able to work in the 400 square foot range.

If you wanted to more easily and consistently humidify a much bigger room of about 400 square feet plus, we would suggest the Air-O-Swiss/BONECO AOS 7135 – or a similarly sized humidifier.

Hope this helps a little bit – good luck with your choice.

      Kind Regards,
      Lisa

  12. “you might want to crank up the humidity level in your room to 70-80% to get some relief”

I don’t know what your source is, but a humidity this high is begging for mold growth and all kinds of diseases, including asthma, viruses, and bacteria. There are differing opinions about humidity ranges but NONE of the ones I’ve read suggest going above 60. The consensus seems to be that humidity should be between 45 and 55 in the winter.

    • Hey Peter,

Thanks for pointing this out, the key word missing from that sentence (which we have just added) is, “temporarily”.

This information was obtained directly from the Vicks WarmMist box and reads…”When you or your child are experiencing congestion, then the humidity should be kept much higher, 70-80% during these periods for best effect”.

      Kind Regards,
      Lisa
